Having a fabulous resume is only useful if you have places to submit it. So how do you find available job openings?
In spite of gloomy economic reports, help-wanted signs are everywhere. Sometimes they are even nailed to telephone poles. Be wary of "employers" that advertise large earnings working from your home and require you to pay money in advance.
Here are better ways of finding job openings:
- Look in the newspaper - Employers do still advertise the old-fashioned way. While you will find employment ads any day of the week, Sunday is the day most sought-after by advertisers. Look in big and little newspapers, and don't forget the free weeklies.
- Search online - There are literally dozens of websites that post job openings. Full-time, part-time, temporary, and consulting work resources are all listed in abundance.
- Networking - If you know someone in your chosen field, talk to that person and ask to be connected to other people in that field.
- Volunteer - Sometimes a volunteer position leads to a job. As always, start with your area of interest and see what opportunities present themselves.
- Do temporary work - Working for a temporary agency can get your foot in the door. Many temporary placements turn into permanent positions.
When searching online, look at specific companies that may interest you, or try Internet-based employment networks, such as:
