Discussing Your Disability With Others
Jump to parent tip
Should you talk about your disability during the job interview? That's
a difficult question. If your disability is relevant to the job, then
you'll probably want to discuss it with a potential employer. In some
situations, it might be helpful to let an employer know about your
disability. Here's a link to some guidelines to help you decide what's
right for you:
The 411 on Disability Disclosure
For Parents
One of the hardest things to decide is what to tell others about us.
This can be especially true if someone has a disability, and even
more so if the disability is not readily apparent. Are there
situations where it can be helpful for your son or daughter to let
someone know about their disability? And how much information should
they share? The 411 on Disability Disclosure workbook contains a
variety of activities that can help your son or daughter think about
what they want to share with others, in both work and social
situations. Here's how you can help:
- Look at the activities in this workbook with your son or daughter and help them choose a few activities.
- It will be important to help them gather information and think through their answers.
- You can also help your son or daughter role-play or practice how they will respond in different situations.
- Share this resource with school personnel and see if it can be incorporated into any classroom activities.
