Getting Experience
Jump to parent tip
Most employers like to hire people who've already had some work experience. Employers often think that if you have experience, they won't have to spend as much time training you. But if you haven't worked before, how can you get the experience employers want? Here are some suggestions.
For Parents
Chances are, your first job wasn't your "dream job." The same will
likely be true for your son or daughter. As you know, most
employers like to hire people who already have work experience.
Helping your son or daughter get real-world experience through
volunteering, summer, after-school work, or an internship may be
one of the most important things you can help them do to promote
their future success. Research has shown that most young adults
with disabilities have not had the same opportunities as other
young adults to try out work, gain experience, and build
references for resumes. This puts young adults with disabilities
at a considerable disadvantage when they complete postsecondary
education and begin their job search. The best thing you can do is
give your son or daughter the same advantages as any other young
adult.
