Even if you don't have an IEP team, you can still plan your future. It's important for you and your family to work together with your school, friends, relatives, other contacts, and professionals to explore the things that interest you and use your strengths. Most high school guidance offices have computer programs and other resources to help you think about what you want to do for work. Talk with your guidance counselor to schedule a time to take one of these "interest inventories." To see an example, go to: http://www.iccweb.com/careerfocus/index.asp

Here's another website that can help you find out what you're good at: http://www.youthhood.org/hangout/km_index.asp. Take a look at "Figuring out Who I Am," "Knowing My Accomplishments," and "Having a Disability."

For Parents
It's important that your young adult know as much as possible about him- or herself, including learning style and disability. Choosing a career that matches one's strengths, interests, abilities, preferences, and personality greatly increases the likelihood of a good match. Here's how you can help:
  1. In order to self-advocate, young adults need to know not only their strengths, but where they might need assistance. Understanding a personal learning style and any disability-related needs allows them to learn about accommodations and supports that can be requested at work and in the community to increase their success.
  2. Helping your son or daughter learn about and meet successful adults who have a similar disability can help reassure them about their ability to succeed. Many disability-related organizations can help introduce you to adult role models.
Check out the "interest inventory" links in this section of the website.
