What Do I Want To Do?

Jump to parent tip

Before you start looking for jobs, it's a good idea to think about what you like to do. The more you know about yourself, the easier it will be to tell if a job is right for you. It's also smart to ask other people to help you. If you're in high school, you probably have good resources as close as your school guidance office. Or if you have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and meet with an IEP Team (sometimes this meeting is called a PPT), you can include activities to learn about yourself and your interests and abilities.

For Parents
You can be an invaluable asset in helping your son or daughter determine the right job or career direction. If he or she has an IEP Team, work with the team to provide guidance in developing a program that will help your son or daughter transition into the work world. If you do not have an IEP Team, it's important for you to work with your son's or daughter's school, as well as with friends, relatives, other contacts, and professionals to help your young adult plan for the future.
